Q: How do you know the one area you want to grow & build your career in? What if there are multiple interests/skills an individual has?
👉 A: It is a process of experimentation / elimination. Passion follows flow and not the other way around. And flow comes from being good at something, overcoming obstacles that felt insurmountable, seeing success repeatedly, being recognised for the success etc.
Everyone has multiple interest areas, and it is ok to go wide and explore. Especially in your 20s. But the watchout is to not quit something just because it is tough. Try new things for a reasonable period of time (at least a few years) before jumping to something else.
A good career lies at the intersection of purpose (what is meaningful), capability (what am I good at), success (what can pay me good money) and enjoyment (what do I like doing). Learn more about this in the book ‘Ikigai’.
And btw, careers can change too. One can have multiple careers in a lifetime. I have no idea what I will doing 10 years from now. I will experiment with many options and follow the path that I enjoy.
