Marketing Mental Models (aka MMM) for young marketers. Post # 1.
(All posts under this series can be found here: https://harish.blog/topics/mmm/)
[Marketing as a craft is extremely logical and conceptually simple. It has become unnecessarily complicated over time because of a cloud of BS wrapped in jargon. This series of posts seeks to lay out the concepts in a way that anyone can understand the basics of marketing and the mental models or concepts I use on a daily basis].
👉 1. My definition of marketing: ‘Creating demand at scale’ for your product / service / brand by doing ‘amazing storytelling’.
This definition is more than enough to capture all that needs to be said.
💡 ‘Creating demand at scale’ is what makes marketing different from 1×1 selling. Marketing needs to create demand with more leverage (because of scaled growth / media plans). This also captures the need for competitive ‘points of difference’. Scale will happen only when we clearly understand who is the customer and where they congregate etc. More on this in later posts. This is more the ‘science’ part of marketing.
💡 ‘Amazing storytelling’ captures the essence of creativity in marketing. Stories that connect with the customers deeply and make them ‘feel’ a certain way about your brand / product. More on this also later. This is more the ‘art’ part of marketing.
That’s it.
p.s. The term ‘growth marketing’ is a tautology. There is no marketing that is not about growth. Just call it ‘marketing’.
Thanks Harish for simplifying. I am about to start my 1st stint in marketing in next few days and this simplification helps a lot.
