The Immediate Next Step

👉 When you hit a wall that seems unsurmountable, ask this one simple question: What is the ‘immediate next step’?

Project too complicated and ambiguous? What is the INS? (Maybe it is writing a project plan doc).
Unsure about how to handle your subordinate or your boss? What is the INS? (setting up a 1×1 and listening to their pov).
Starting your campaign report and don’t know how to structure? What is the INS? (writing bullet points on whatever comes to mind and then editing later).

It is the mental equivalent of ‘putting one step after the other to finish a marathon’. Don’t worry about the full picture, don’t worry about the all the complications. ‘Starting + Doing’ beats ‘day-dreaming + procrastinating’ any day. (Day-dreaming is also important, but that’s for another post).

Procrastination mostly happens because of fear, not because of laziness. It is pain avoidance, it is paralysis because of lack of clarity on what needs to be done.
👉 So think about the immediate next step and just do that. Action begets action, and before you know it, structure, meaning, flow will all emerge.
